Maurice Deal Atwell Jr.Born 7-20-1931, Died 5-5-2009Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro with Rev. Paul N. Ridolfi officiating. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park. His parents were Margaret McConnell and Maurice Deal Atwell Sr. He has one sister, Mary Atwell Scarborough of Greensboro, NC. Mr. Atwell graduated from Marion High School and from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Textile Management. Graduate Studies were done at LaSalle and the University of Michigan. While at State he belonged to Phi Psi Honorary Fraternity and to Pi Kappa Phi Social Fraternity. He became Communicant with the Presbyterian Church in 1940 and he served in various categories through the years; Elder, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the Pulpit Committee, and chairman of a major building fund-drive for the Columbia Theological Seminary. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was in Korea when the Treaty was signed in 1953. His working career was spent in textiles and he was well known for his trouble shooting ability, and as a developer of men. During his 50 year career, he worked with Millikan, Bibb, Dan River, and retired from Burlington Industries. He was the subject of a book, written by a consultant The Best Plant Manager I Ever Saw. He was active in the Civic Club, Director of Georgia Textile Manufacturing Association, Director of Chamber of Commerce, Director of United Way, Director of Junior Achievement, Neighborhood Commission of the Boy Scouts and served on the Advisory Board to the President of Berry College. At various times he belonged to the Rotary Club and The American Legion. His main interests have been golf, bridge, and traveling. Watching and collecting "B" western movies has been his most recent hobby because you can always tell who the "good guys" are. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, the former Hope McCall, also of Marion and one granddaughter, Hannah Faith Atwell. Survivors include Maurice Deal Atwell, III and his wife, Jeannie of Ringgold, Georgia, Carl C. Atwell of Asheboro, Renee' Atwell Green and her husband, Mickey of Asheboro. He has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 7-9 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro, NC for a scholarship in memory of Maurice Deal Atwell, Jr. and Hope McCall Atwell.
