Lynn Walter Meier

d. October 28, 2021

Lynn Walter Meier, 77, passed away Thursday morning October 28, 2021 at Randolph Health in Asheboro, NC. Preceded in death by her parents, Doris Evans Walter and Frank Orson Walter, beloved sister Doris “Dottie” Laber, and brother-in-law, Larry J. Laber.  Survived by her husband of 54 years Paul Meier of Asheboro, NC and loving children: Mike Meier (the late Yung Chi) of Sophia, NC; Jodi Meier (Mike Overly) of Asheboro, NC; Carrie Meier (Kevin Wetter) of Belmont, NC; and granddaughter Acacia Rose Overly. Also, brother- and sister-in-law, Eugene “Sonny” Meier and Sharon Meier of Lewes, DE; nieces Carolynn de Tessieres (Alex de Tessieres, Leah & Luc) and Lynda Meier (Herbert Liebert) of MD; and nephew Steven Meier of CO.

Lynn Evans Walter was born April 5, 1944 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  Lynn lived in several states before her family settled in Avondale, Maryland.  As a child, Lynn enjoyed visiting her grandparents’ farm in Vermont and dreamed of becoming a “farmerette” or a Radio City Rockette.  Lynn graduated from Northwestern High School in 1962 and earned a B.A. in Home Economics from the University of Maryland in 1967.  After college, Lynn worked as a Child Placement Social Worker for the City of Baltimore.

On September 8,1967 Lynn married her high school sweetheart, Paul Meier.  The couple moved to Akron, Ohio briefly before settling in Jackson, Michigan. Lynn continued her work as a social worker until becoming a mother in 1971. She then devoted her time to being a mom, homemaker, and volunteer.  In Michigan, Lynn was very involved with the Mary Lyon Nursery School, which her two eldest children attended, as well as All Saints Episcopal Church.

In 1983, the family moved to Asheboro, NC.  Lynn soon became a docent at the North Carolina Zoological Park.  She could often be found in the aviary, answering visitors' questions about the various bird species. She also became very involved with the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd - taking on a regular Meals on Wheels route, helping and sometimes leading the church’s Mission Outreach ministry, and assisting with events like Vacation Bible School. In the early 2000s, Lynn was a founding member of the Dorcas Group at Good Shepherd, a knitting and crocheting group that met weekly.  Over the years, Dorcas donated hundreds of baby hats to local hospitals, created knitted knockers for people recovering from mastectomies, and sent hundreds of prayer shawls to people enduring difficult times.

Throughout her life, Lynn was devoted to her family.  She adored her older sister Dottie and they shared a special relationship until Dottie’s death in 2020.  Lynn was very involved in her children’s lives and even “adopted” several bonus children over the years.  Perhaps her greatest joy came in 2013 when she became a Grammy.  Lynn and Paul were thrilled to serve as granddaughter Acacia’s primary daycare until she started school.  Lynn had a special knack for conducting educational and crafty activities with children. She had recently begun teaching Acacia to knit.

In addition to knitting, Lynn enjoyed sewing, reading, baking, and gardening.  She kept a variety of plants and flowers around the house.  A lover of animals, Lynn had a soft spot for dogs, especially golden retrievers. She enjoyed bird watching from the comfort of her deck or spotting brown pelicans when near the shore.  Lynn also appreciated music, particularly hymns, and could regularly be heard singing as she went about her days.
