Hilda Louise Wilson

d. October 3, 2020

Hilda Louise Wilson, 89, former resident of Walhalla, SC, died at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home in Asheboro, NC on Saturday, October 3, 2020 following a period of declining health. Born in Anderson, SC, on December 16, 1930, she was the daughter of Robert Lee and Mary Evelyn Cox Wilson. A graduate of Walhalla High School, she was awarded a Bachelor's Degree from Winthrop University and Master's Degree from Western Carolina University. She was a fifth-grade teacher in the Oconee County Schools for over thirty-five years. And she was an avid fan of the Clemson Tigers! During retirement, she turned her attention to serving her church and community in many areas. One of her first loves became Oconee County Habitat for Humanity where she served on many committees and volunteered countless hours of labor on the homes being built. To earn money for Habitat she single handedly made and sold Peanut Brittle each fall and winter, raising over a thousand dollars each year for several years. The Walhalla Presbyterian Church also was the recipient of many years of dedicated service through serving on committees, singing in the Chancel Choir, and serving with the Women of the Church. One of her most cherished assignments at the Church was welcoming a Vietnamese family sponsored by the Church in 1980. The Vu's became her adopted family as she was instrumental in helping them with the language and customs of this country, becoming "Grandmother" to the children and watching them become honored college graduates and outstanding world citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gharis Jennings Wilson and a nephew, Charles L. Hicks, Jr. She is survived by a sister, Linda Wilson Hicks of Asheboro, NC; nieces Susan Hicks Clifford (Dan) of Park Ridge, IL, Carol Hicks Stott (David) of Lexington, NC, and Donna McLean Hicks of Laurinburg, NC; Grandnieces Ashley Stott Streich (Eric) of High Point, NC and Sarah Evelyn Hicks Jarvis (Conner) of Raleigh, NC; grandnephews Charles Hicks, III of Raleigh, NC, Wilson Hicks (Alyson) of Raleigh, NC, Dawson Stott of Memphis, TN, Ryan Clifford of Evanston, IL and Brendan Clifford of Park Ridge, IL; and her adopted family Van and Cuong Vu of Seneca, SC and their children Chan Vu of Atlanta, GA, Thuy Vu of Knoxville, TN, Tuyet Redgwell of London, England, and Kiem Vu of Brooklyn, NY. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Walhalla, SC on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Morton White officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walhalla Presbyterian Church, PO Box 917, Walhalla, SC 29691, https://sites.google.com/site/walhallapresbyterianchurch/on-line-donations or Oconee County Habitat for Humanity, 130 Bountyland Rd, Seneca, SC 29672, https://www.oconeehabitat.org Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the Wilson family.
