"Coach" was an inspiration to me as he was to many who played sports under his leadership at South Stanly High School. I for one am a better person from his guidance and leadership. It was a privilege to have known him with many special memory's created. He was a special person that I consider my mentor as I went on to coach other youth in sports myself. God's blessings to the family in this time of loss.

I worked for Mr. West at Aquadale Elem as custodian. He was a great person and we all felt a part of a great working family. He loved all the staff and students. God bless his family and friends. You’re in my prayers for comfort.

Coach West led by example, and that example has touched the lives of countless young people. His legacy has already gone well beyond the football field and classroom, and I am proud to have known him as both coach and friend. Rest easy, Coach West...you will be missed! Coach West will be remembered as an incredible person, excellent teacher and outstanding high school coach. He instilled the importance of teamwork and expected nothing but your best on the athletic field. The high standards set by Coach West for his teams brought about many wins on the Jordan Matthews basketball court and the 1965 Eastern 2A State Championship. His legacy and coaching skills will continue to live on among his many former players that were fortunate to have played for him.
