Mary Elizabeth Rankin

d. September 30, 2020

Beth Rankin, devoted mother of two children, beloved wife, adored sister, faithful friend, artist and dedicated teacher, died September 30 at her home surrounded by family. Her husband, Bill Rankin, said the cause was pancreatic cancer. Mrs. Rankin, a graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, had many passions in life. Her first and enduring love was for the arts. She earned a master's degree in fine arts from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and then became a Visiting Artist of North Carolina. It was in that role that she discovered her second great passion and gift for teaching. She taught hundreds of school children in Asheboro and Randolph County, most recently at Uwharrie Charter Academy, throughout her career. Her expertise was in special education. She excelled as a teacher for exceptional children and will be remembered by her students and co-workers as a loving, kind, patient and talented teacher. Mary Elizabeth Atwater was born on December 22, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. Her father, James Atwater, was a journalist and her mother, Patricia (Levington) Atwater, was a journalism professor. She was the first born of six children and spent her childhood in Irvington, NY; Bethesda, MD; London, England, and summered on her beloved Block Island, RI. In 1986, Beth Atwater married the love of her life, Bill Rankin, a sculptor. Mr. Rankin's career brought them to Asheboro, NC, where they made their home and raised their two children, Will and Clara. Mrs. Rankin was a fierce advocate for children with learning differences. She was active in her church, The Church of the Good Shepherd, and her community. During many an election cycle, she could be found knocking on doors to encourage people to get out and vote. "Beth had a gentle demeanor, but she was incredibly strong," her sister Jenny Atwater said. "She was a champion for the children she taught and for her own children. She lit up any room she was in and brought grace and kindness to every person she met." She is survived by her husband of 34 years, William L. Rankin III, a son, William A. Rankin of Asheboro, a daughter, Clara L. Rankin, of Winston Salem; her siblings, Stephen G. Atwater, Christopher P. Atwater, Andrew D. Atwater, Katharine T. Butcher and Jennifer S. Atwater; 7 nieces and nephews; and countless students, coworkers and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt. A private family service will be held. A celebration of life will be scheduled when it is safe to do so. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd Memorial Endowment Fund. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the family.
