Emily Rooks Self

d. July 6, 2020

Emily Huger Rooks Self, 67, of Asheboro, N.C., died on Monday, July 6, in Moses Cone Hospital after a long battle with declining health. She was with her family. Emily was born in Asheboro on June 29, 1953, to now deceased Emily Labouisse Rooks and David M. Rooks, Jr. Her parents raised Emily and her brother in Asheboro, the small community where she and her husband Tim Self have resided since their marriage in 1980 and raised their three children. Well known and loved by her nickname "P-Nut," Emily lived her life with a rare open-heartedness and devotion to her family, friends, and community. Whether sorting a tiff with the children or confronting an injustice in her small city, P-Nut never faltered in her commitment to fairness and her courage to act on what she believed. Most recently, P-Nut worked with Randolph County Child Support Services after her early adulthood as a full-time mother and volunteer in her community. P-Nut attended East Carolina University, but held allegiance to the UNC Tar Heels and raised her children accordingly. Emily is survived by her husband, Timothy Cecil Self of Asheboro; her daughter Beth Self Monroe and her husband Drew Monroe and their two children, McKenna and Alden, all of Durham, N.C.; her daughter Julia Anne Self and fiance Mark Sanchez of Raleigh, her son David Robert Self from Greensboro; her step-son Adam Miller and his wife Amy Miller from Raleigh; brother David Monroe Rooks of Chapel Hill and his wife Elizabeth Huff Rooks and their children Adrienne Waddell from Charlotte and Kathryn Rooks from Louisville. Emily`s maternal grandparents were William Huger Labouise and Emily Phelps Labouisse of Charlotte, NC. The paternal grandparents were David M. Rooks and Mary Thomas Rooks of Birmingham, AL. Due to the pandemic, a small, private celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 19th at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center; https://donate.splcenter.org/ Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the family.
