Curtis John Lorimer

d. October 22, 2019

Curtis John Lorimer, 73, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 22, 2019. Curt was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Rev. Paul Alfred and Genevieve Lorimer on October 22, 1946. He was the third of 3 children. His siblings are brother, Rev. Steven Lorimer(deceased) (wife, Fancita) and his sister Faith Fisher (husband, Dan). He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, father-in-law and grandfather.

A service of remembrance will be 2pm, Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, followed by a visitation in the church fellowship hall.

Curt began his career as an educator and administrator after graduating from Dana College in Nebraska. He earned 2 masters degrees, one from Long Island University and the other from Georgia State University. He met his wife of 45 years, Vickie, while they were teaching at Morrow Sr. High School in Clayton County, Georgia.

After living in Georgia and Vermont, he and his family moved to Asheboro in 1984, the birthplace of his wife, Vickie. He loved Asheboro as evidenced by his many contributions to the city and county.  One of those contributions included working with artist, Susan Harrell, repainting the mural downtown on Fayetteville St. He was past President of the United Way, founder/organizer of the Downtown Merchants' Association, a Trustee for Randolph Community College, and a board member of Hospice of Randolph County. He was awarded the Volunteer of the Year by the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce in 2005, and in 2013, Curt was awarded the Governor's Award for volunteer services. He danced with the Randolph County Stars and received the Rotary Service Before Self award in 2017. Curt directed Leadership Randolph and recruited many participants for that organization.  He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served on various committees and was a past Council President. As his daughters grew up, he coached both of them in the Asheboro Parks and Rec Softball league. Two of his passions were going to the beach and tailgating/attending Carolina Panthers' games with family and friends. Another passion was making stained glass for family and friends.  Curt was also one of the thousands who attended Woodstock in 1969!

As a teacher and administrator for 30+ years, he touched the lives of many through his patient and caring disposition. He is well remembered by staff, colleagues and students for his encouragement and ability to compromise difficult situations. His ability to whole heartedly listen to others and his organization skills made him a vital part of numerous committees, boards and organizations.

Curt is survived by his wife, Vickie and daughters Courtney Kelly and husband, Mac, of Asheboro and Brittany Laxton and husband, James, of Holly Springs, NC. He was loved by his grandchildren, Conner & Larson Kelly and Brody & Brock Laxton.
