In 1981, he retired and married Georgia Routh in 1987. They enjoyed retirement together for 29 years. His life was incredibly enriched by Georgia and her family. Getting married gave Bobby and Georgia a "second wind."

Mr. Menius was an active member of First Methodist Church, and a very involved family man. He was always attentive to his parents, in-laws, children, and other family and friends. Mr. Menius was also involved in scouting, through troop 527 at First Methodist Church. Bobby liked golf! Shot his age at 84 and played until he was 90. Another love was big band music. This eulogy was delivered at his funeral on Sept. 8, 2019 by his son Bill Menius.

Thank you all for coming to this celebration of the life of Robert W. Menius.  Our family very much appreciates your presence and support at this emotional time.

I especially want to thank my brothers Ed and Jim and my sister-in-law Sherree for all of the time and effort in taking care of Dad while I have been living out of state for the last 4 years. They did a great job.

Bobby Menius was born in 1919. He was a veteran and a member of “the finest generation”-served 4 years as a sergeant in the army in Europe during WW II.

We all remember Dad as the quintessential Southern Gentleman; well dressed, polite, never unpleasant, and a steadfast dependable friend to many. He held the standards of integrity and the duty that went with it.  And that included being a hard worker and loyal employee.

Dad was all about being a family man. He touched all of the bases-took care of his parents, wonderful father, good provider, a scout leader, and dedicated member of First Methodist Church.

But where he really shone was as a husband. The man loved being married, and was lucky to have two wonderful wives. He was married a total of 66 years.  Did pretty much everything Mom or Georgia ever requested.  We don’t remember Mom and Dad ever having a real argument. WOW!

Bobby Menius was very focused on his family. He loved golf, but gave it up when he started a family, only picked it up again after we were grown. He was good at it too! Shot his age at 84 and played until he was 90!

So he stayed around our house and taught us so many skills–yardwork, woodworking, etc. Also how to throw a ball, swing a bat, ride a bike, and swim. There was no driving to classes, just Dad teaching us himself.  He was always around and became “Uncle Bobby” to the neighborhood kids.  They loved to show up on Sundays when we had homemade ice cream.  I think Durham Potter could smell it.  He seemed to be there every time!  Dad loved to read to us boys at night when we were little  books like “Old Yeller”, “The Call of the Wild” and “Robin Hood”.

Dad was generous to us boys. Passed all of our grandfather’s inheritance on down to us, and brought us whatever he figured we needed. A lawnmower, a TV, -whatever.

Dad made a lasting impression on us boys when he came and rescued our winter sledding down Kiser hill.  There was a turn at the bottom of the hill where the snow melted early, ending our sledding.  Dad would appear with his wheelbarrow and shovel.  He would push a heavy wheelbarrow full of snow from the woods, and use it to cover bare spots of pavement . I noticed that no other fathers were out there.  I never forgot his example of thoughtfulness for the neighborhood.

Dad did have a career, and he made a courageous move at age 47 to BB Walker shoe, where he learned computer programing and  started and managed the new Data Processing Department. It was a huge challenge, he accepted it, and succeeded.

Our family must acknowledge and thank all of the family and friends who over the last 5 years have visited Dad, taken him out to eat, sent cards, and made him feel loved and not forgotten. A special thanks to Linda Cranford for taking care of Dad and Georgia, and being so supportive of Dad. We will be forever grateful to the staff at Cross Road and Clapp’s who really went the second mile in taking care of our father.

In closing, Dad lived a long life, came within 11 days of being   100 years old.  He actually spent more years in retirement than he did working.  We were all blessed by the fine example Bobby Menius set and by the love he left behind.  And Ed, Jim, and I thank him for the “storybook” childhood he gave us.
