Joseph (Joe) Culverhouse Bossong, died at age 80 on November 23, 2018, from a brief illness. Joe was born in Asheboro, NC on April 4, 1938. He graduated from Randolph Macon Military Academy in Front Royal, Virginia in 1956. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. From there, he continued his studies at the New York School of Business. In 1960, while still attending school in New York, Joe joined Bossong Hosiery Mills, a manufacturer of ladies' hosiery and medical products, in Asheboro, NC. He worked alongside his brother, Charles Julian Bossong, and their father and business founder Charles G. Bossong. The business survives today, and this year celebrated its 92nd anniversary. Joe served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers.

Faith, family and friendship were the priorities of Joe's life. He was an avid and accomplished golfer. He loved dogs and was a dog owner for most of his life. Joe was a dedicated supporter of UNC athletics, and he attended UNC football and basketball games for decades. He enjoyed reading, especially about matters of Christian faith and theology.

Serving his community was also important to Joe. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and the Staff Parish Committee, and where he taught Sunday School for 25 years. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the local American Red Cross. He was an active Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Board of Directors of the United Way and the Asheboro-Randolph YMCA. Additionally, he served for two decades as a member of the Board of Directors of Randolph Hospital, serving as Secretary and Chairman of the Finance Committee for 17 years. Joe co-founded the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast and the Community Bible Study. Joe also served as Chairman of the Board of the Sheltered Workshop, in Asheboro. Joe is survived by spouse Margaret Huntley Bossong, of Asheboro, NC, his brother Charles Julian Bossong, of Asheboro, NC, his son, Joseph Culverhouse Bossong Jr., and grandsons Joseph Culverhouse Bossong III and William Hemingway Bossong, of Charlotte, NC, his son Fulton Huntley Bossong, and his spouse Lillian Hardison Bossong, of Asheboro, NC and grandsons Fulton Huntley Bossong Jr. and Frank Ansley Bossong, both of Asheboro, NC, and his son, Julian Redwine Bossong and his spouse Mary Pleasants Bossong and grandchildren Edward Julian Bossong and Sarah Pleasants Bossong, of Raleigh NC. He had numerous sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Charles George Bossong Jr. and by his parents, Charles George Bossong and Gladys Julian Bossong.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 6-8 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.
