Roger Dean Spoon

Roger Dean Spoon, age 83, of Asheboro died on July 14 due to Bulbar ALS at Randolph Hospice House where he received the best of care.

Mr. Spoon was born in Guilford County, NC on June 20, 1935 to Lillie Robena Craven Spoon and Shellie Underwood Spoon and grew up in High Point and Ramseur, NC.  Roger was a 1953 graduate of Ramseur High School and a 1957 graduate of Pfeiffer University.

He married Joyce Harper on November 26, 1965.

Roger was employed in cost accounting with General Electric and Black & Decker for 28 years and retired as an auditor with the NC Department of Revenue after 12 years of service.  He formerly served on the Asheboro Redevelopment Commission.

Roger loved the Duke Blue Devils and all types of sports that involved a ball.  He liked to tell people he had visited every major league baseball stadium.  He loved traveling the USA and Europe, and he enjoyed driving cross country and cruising the open seas.  He skied in Innsbrook, NC, Idaho, and British Columbia.

Roger was a runner even before it was fashionable.  Every afternoon around 4 pm he would be seen in the neighborhood, rain or shine, cold or hot.  He ran in many 10k's but he ran just for the love of running.  When running in the neighborhood was not feasible due to illness, he bought a treadmill and ran in the garage, listening to the radio and looking out over the beautiful Uwharrie mountains.

Roger loved hanging out with his coffee buddies at Bojangles every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

He loved his cats, adopting as many as 4 at a time.  His cats loved him too.

Roger was active in his church, First Presbyterian Church for many years where he was an elected deacon and served as an officer in the Westminster Sunday School class.  A recent member of First United Methodist Church in Asheboro he enjoyed the 11 o'clock service and loved his church family there.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Rev. Lynda Ferguson and Dr. Donald Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
