Obituary of David Dennis
David McLean Dennis, 89, of Troy, NC, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his children: David (Pam) Dennis, Shelby, NC; Charles (Kathy) Dennis, Mt. Gilead, NC; and John (Lori) Dennis, Roswell, GA. He was also the proud grandfather of Matthew Dennis of Greenville, SC, and Ethan Dennis of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Merlene; his son, Daniel McLean Dennis; and his parents, Anderson J. Dennis and Sarah Virginia (Sadie) Nordan. Surviving siblings are Virginia Elder of Thomasville, Carson Dennis of Pinehurst, Jane Grimes of Siler City, and Nancy (Mack) Helsabeck of Lexington.
Mr. Dennis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier in Montgomery County after 30 years of service and ended his career at Troy Lumber Company as purchasing manager. A graduate of Pfeiffer College in music, he served as organist at First Baptist Church for over 20 years and enjoyed concertizing with Fred Taylor, recording several CDs. He was also the author of a book, Tales from Dutchman’s Creek, published in 2008, which includes the tales he so loved to share on cold nights with the Dutchman’s Creek Hunt Club. He was a resident of Sandy Ridge Memory Care in Candor in his later years.
Visitation with the family will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy, NC. A service to celebrate the life of David will be held at First Baptist Church, 401 E. Main Street, Troy, NC, on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Liberty Hill Church Rd., Mt. Gilead, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 401 E. Main Street, Troy, NC 27371.
