Annie Cheek Shaw

d. July 5, 2017

Annie Cheek Shaw, 98, passed away Wednesday, July 5. Annie was born in Moore County on March 10, 1919 to the late Robert Franklin and Dora Cheek. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 1:30-2:30 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Funeral services will follow on Sunday at 3:00 pm in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Baird officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Clyde T. Shaw and her seven older brothers, Claude, Frank, Colon, Carl, Waldo, Edgar and Graham Cheek. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She especially loved the thirty-plus years she sang with the Chancel Choir. Annie began working in the Register of Deeds Office in 1948. She ran for Register of Deeds in 1952 and was elected. Annie was re-elected nine times, serving the people of Randolph County for thirty-four years. She always strived to run a highly efficient office rendering courteous service to everyone she came in contact with. While in office she served as Clerk of the Board of Commissioners from 1981-1983. For her years of service to Randolph County and the Republican Party, the Randolph County Republican Women awarded Annie the Alice Ward Award in 1985 as an outstanding Republican woman. Following her retirement in 1986, Governor Jim Martin appointed Annie to the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging in Raleigh. The Council made recommendations to the Secretary of the NC Department of Human Resources for the improvement of human services for older citizens. In 1987 she was appointed through the Randolph County Clerk of Courts Office to serve on the Jury Commission which she served for twenty years. To her great surprise, in 1996 the Randolph County Board of Commissioners voted to name the new Register of Deeds and Board of Elections building in her honor, The Shaw Building. Of this she was most honored and grateful. While Annie's political life was a very important part of her life, she cherished her family. Her selfless love for her family was apparent in the way she was such an avid supporter of everything her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved in. She attended many golf tournaments, choir concerts, dance recitals, football games, soccer games, t-ball games and even Upward Basketball games in her nineties. For the past twenty-some years, the highlight of each year has been our family vacation at North Myrtle Beach. Those left to cherish her memory are daughters Barbara S. Coltrane, Eunice S. Baird, and son Clyde T. Shaw, Jr. In addition to the children, the great joys of Annie's life included her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly called her "Grannie." Her grandchildren are Rick Lewallen and wife Libby, Rodney Lewallen and wife Gloria, Michele Baird Counter and husband Jason, Carey Anne Shaw, C.T. Shaw and wife Holly, and step-grandson Chas Coltrane and wife Rebecca. Her great-grandchildren are Jonathan and Maren Lewallen, Anna, Katherine, and Caroline Counter, Ani and I.V. Shaw, and step-great-grandchildren Chasen Coltrane, Courtney and Garrett Adkins. She is also survived by her sister Helen Mabe of Pinehurst, NC. In Proverbs 22:14 the Bible says, "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life." Our mother was a gracious, God-fearing lady who personified Southern charm, gentleness and compassion. She was blessed with a long and abundant life of which we are so thankful. The family recognizes with the deepest gratitude, Cynthia Cole, Stacey Scotten, Syble Lindsey, Tina Woodford, Patty Gaines, and all her caregivers, for the exceptionally compassionate care that they have given.
