Ernest Wayne Key

d. April 9, 2017

Ernest Wayne Key, age 80, of Asheboro passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Key was born in Surry County, NC on November 26, 1936 to Ernest C. and Alma Marion Key. Wayne served his country in the U.S. Army for 4 years as an Army cook. He was a cook for Tommy's Drive Inn for 17 years. He formerly drove a route truck for Thomas Brothers and was formerly employed as head fixer at A&F Vending. He also was a cook at Paw Paw's Place for a short period of time and Chisholm's Drive Inn. His favorite place to hang out in the old days was "Robin Hood" that was later turned into Paw Paw's by his brother Mike Key. Wayne enjoyed fishing at Holden Beach where they once had a vacation home. He enjoyed camping. He camped with his family for a little over 9 years at Zooland Family Campground and campgrounds in Mt. Airy. He loved spending time with his family and close friends. He enjoyed raising 4 girls, but always wished they had 2 bathrooms. But he knew how to do it-holler one word-means you come out fast/now. He enjoyed and loved all of his grandchildren, watching all of them grow up, be successful, getting married, and giving him great grandchildren. Wayne's face and eyes, always his expression seemed to be glowing and sometimes his eyes a little teary-eyed when all the family was together. He loved all the hugs and kisses he got! Oh yea-he loved his '77 Ford truck "Whitie." Wayne was a Ford man all his life. He loved NASCAR racing on the weekend, resting in his recliner. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his stepmother, Celeste Key, daughter, Pamela Key Perdue, and brother, Joe Keye. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Violette Hinesley Key; daughters, Cindy K. Hockett of Randleman, Lynn K. Hayes and husband Harris of Asheboro, and Amanda K. Ragsdale and husband Danial of Randleman; 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 5 grandpups; half brothers, Mike Key and wife Janet of Asheboro, and Van Key of Randleman. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 11:30 am-1:30 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. A graveside service will follow on Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Randolph Memorial Park with Pastor Mark Wilburn officiating and with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
