William Howell (Bill) Winston, age 81, of Asheboro died Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at his home.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Brian Gawf and Rev. Connie Weaver officiating. The family will receive friends in the small fellowship hall after the service.
He was born April 14, 1932 in Nelson, Virginia to the late Howell Nelson Winston and Mary Clements Winston. He grew up on a tobacco farm in Nelson. He was a graduate of Clarksville High School in Clarksville, Virginia as Valedictorian of the Class of 1949.
He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1953 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. At Virginia Tech he was a member of ROTC, The Cadet Corps, Alpha Kappa Psi and the baseball team. He served two years active duty in the U.S. Army Infantry in Germany.
He spent his entire business career in textiles, working for the Burlington Mills and the Klopman Mills Division of Burlington Industries, Texfi Industries, Whittaker Mills Corporation, Russell Hosiery Mills, Inc., Russmont Hosiery, Trimfit, and Amherst Hosiery Corporation from which he retired as Vice-President in 1998. After retirement he worked part-time for H&R Block for over ten years.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1976 where he served as an ordained elder and deacon and on numerous committees.
He was a charter member of the Randolph Prison Chaplaincy Program and served as treasurer for thirty one years.
He was a member of SCORE for eleven years serving as chairman for three years during which time the Asheboro Chapter #648 was named the North Carolina Chapter of the Year for the first time.
He also served on the Board of Directors of the Randolph County Family Crisis Center and the Advisory Committee to the Small Business Center of Randolph Community College.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vera of the home, brother J. Lewis Winston and wife Carol of Richmond, VA and brother Eugene C. Winston and wife Mary of Maryville, IL. Surviving children are daughter Donna W. Laney and husband Walter of Liberty Hill, SC, son Mark Howell Winston and wife Kelly and children Haley and Blair of Marietta, GA, daughter Elizabeth W. Acierno and husband Vincent and children Avery and Katherine of Chapel Hill, NC, daughter Mary W. Duncan and husband Robert and children Will and Chris of Lookout Mountain, TN.
