William Henry "Bill" Underwood, 80, of 623 Corwith St., Asheboro died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 2, 2008 from 6-8 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Asheboro Friends Meeting with Rev. Ken Thames and Rev. Pat Thames officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
A native of Guilford County, Mr. Underwood was born on July 11, 1927 to Charles and Carrie Hamlin Underwood. He was a self employed masonry contractor, taught brick laying at Asheboro High School in the 70s and ran a bandsaw for a time for Parris Frames. Mr. Underwood was a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting where he was a member of the Friendly Friends Sunday school class. He served as an usher for 40 years with many of them being as head usher, also served as a trustee, elder, superintendent of Sunday School, house and grounds committee and Quaker men. He served as Guardian Ad Litem for Abused Children until his health began to fail. Mr. Underwood taught young boys the fundamentals of football that eventually led to the organizing of midget football in Asheboro. He loved people and had many friends in many places. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Jean Jeffries and a brother, Alston Underwood.
Mr. Underwood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther Walker Underwood, daughters, Vikki U. Parris, June U. Bissette and her husband Rusty; sons Gil Underwood and his companion, Bonnie Laughlin, Jeff Underwood and his wife Alice; grandchildren, Jacob and Casey Parris and Evan and Keli Underwood.
