William Donald Smith

William Donald Smith, age 80, of Asheboro died Monday, July 22, 2019 at Randolph Hospice House.

Mr. Smith was born August 27, 1938 in Asheboro, the son of William Ralph Smith and Faye Patterson Smith.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Tony Martin Smith.

Don was a professional land surveyor. He loved his work which spanned some 50 years. He initiated the start of the local chapter of the Society of Surveyors and served as its first president. He is probably the only surveyor who still hand-lettered his maps, a work of art.

An enthusiastic person, Don was a great storyteller about his work, his family and the world around him. An Air Force veteran, he also attended NC State University and was one of the biggest fans of their sports programs. Don was a Boy Scout Master for a time and also served as Republican precinct chairman in North Carolina for many years. Don loved his family and was greatly loved by them. He was privately a very religious person.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dianne McRae Smith; children, William Donald Smith, Jr and wife Camlynn, Lynn Smith Covington; sister, Carol Smith Bowers and husband Henry; grandchildren, Lewis Smith and wife Amanda, Sarah Smith Mackey and husband John, Colin Covington, Talia C. Greene and husband Chris; great grandchildren, Natalie Greene, Emma Mackey, Grayson Smith, Jada Covington; niece, Mendy Kiser; sisters-in-law, Jeanette McRae, Judy McRae.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 1:00-1:45 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with military honors by the Randolph County Guard will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
