William Morrison Barnes, 93, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Carillon Assisted Living of Asheboro.
Mr. Barnes was born January 6, 1923 in Asheboro to Lee Gray and Lydia Hussey Barnes. He was a graduate of Farmer High School and was a proud WWII US Navy veteran, where he served in the Pacific. Upon discharge from the Navy Mr. Barnes owned a Texaco service station and then worked for Acme-McCrary Corporation.
Mr. Barnes was a life-long member of New Union United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. In 1999, he was recognized by the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church with a Laity Service Award.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lee Gray and Lydia Hussey Barnes, his sisters Mary Louise Barnes, Jewel Barnes, Leta Morton and brother John Barnes.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann Farlow Barnes, daughters Sheila Barnes of Asheboro and Pamela Rakestraw (Tom) of Winston-Salem, granddaughter Emory Rakestraw of Winston-Salem, and sister, Joann Rogers of Asheboro.
A Service of Remembrance and Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 30 at 2:00 pm at New Union United Methodist Church, Asheboro with the Rev. Dr. Sheila Nelson McJilton officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 29 at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro.
