Wendell Norris "Cookie" Whatley, Sr. age 70, of Asheboro died Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Whatley was born in Asheboro on February 19, 1945 to Ralph and Cora Trogdon Whatley. He was the co-owner of Ulah Motor Company for many years before working for Greensboro Auto Parts. Norris was a founding member of the Ulah Fire Department and retired from active duty as Deputy Chief. He was a member of Hunt's Plank Road Chapel. In addition to his parents, Norris was preceded in death by his brothers Ralph E. Whatley, Jr. and Lowell McKay Whatley. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sue Spivey Whatley; sons, Wendell Whatley, Jr. and wife Robin of Asheboro, Charles "Chuck" Whatley of Asheboro, Patrick Whatley and wife Julie of Liberty; daughter-in-law, Tina Whatley; mother-in-law, Agnes Spivey; grandchildren , Josh Holt and fiancée Apphia of Atlanta, GA, Tyler Whatley, Savannah Whatley, Loucinda Whatley all of Asheboro, Andrew Whatley of Liberty, Charlie Whatley of Asheboro, Jacob Whatley of Liberty; great grandchild, Aidan Holt of Atlanta, GA; special friends, Peggy Fogleman, Chief Jerry Dickinson, the late Tommy Fox, as well as many other friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro and at other times at the home of Peggy Fogleman, 4810 US Hwy. 220 Business South, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, 5852 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro with Rev. Bobby Marsh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Flag Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 5852 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, NC 27205 or the Randolph County Fire Protection Association Honor Guard, c/o James Campbell, 152 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203 or BSA Troop 502, P.O. Box 1607, Liberty, NC 27298.
