Wayne Afton Smith

Wayne Afton Smith, age 74, of 1605 Danny Bell Rd., Asheboro died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Randolph Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 2225 South Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Dr. Richard Crider officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park. Mr. Smith was born in Richmond County on October 5, 1938 to Gurney and Ida Swaim Smith. He was retired from Georgia-Pacific after 30 years of service and was an active member of Oakhurst Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Leroy, Edgar, Bill, Gerald and Bobby Smith and sister, Thelma Nelson. Wayne was a loving husband and father and loved being with his granddaughter. He loved being outside working in the yard and garden. He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Smith; daughter, Debra Cheek and her husband Kevin of Asheboro; granddaughter, Alanna Cheek; brothers, Tony Smith and Ray Smith; sisters, Ruth Caudle and Ann Smith; and serveral nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC.
