Herbert Wayne Abernethy, age 81, of Asheboro NC, died on January 28th, 2016 surrounded by family.
Wayne was born on September 2nd, 1934 to Charlie and Vienna Abernethy of Hildebran, NC. He graduated from Appalachian State and was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for over 30 years. He was a member of the Lloyd Bible Class and he served as the Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He was Dean of Asheboro Commercial College and later became president and owner of Salisbury Business College. He served as president of the NC Business College Association for 2 years and was presented the "Man of the Year" award for outstanding contribution to the private business colleges of NC. After selling Salisbury Business College, he became a real estate investor with his wife.
Wayne was a former member of the Asheboro and Salisbury Rotary Clubs as well as the Asheboro Optimist Club.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Medlin Abernethy; son, Gregory Wayne Abernethy and wife Tammie Abernethy; daughter, Sheree A. Powell and husband William Jeffrey Powell; grandchildren, Daniel Abernethy and wife Heather, Joshua Abernethy and Dustin Powell; great grandchildren, Hailey, Caleb and Luke Abernethy; sisters, Jean and husband Wayne Young, Clara and husband Bobby Stilwell of Hildebran, NC and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:30-4:00 PM on January 31st at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave. Asheboro, NC 27203. A remembrance service will immediately follow in the Pugh Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Terry Matthews presiding.
