W. Harold Long, age 89, of Troy died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy. Harold was born December 28, 1924 at Rockingham, NC, the son of John Oliver and Ruby Gertrude Monroe Long. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Troy where he served as a deacon and member of the SteadFast Sunday School class. Harold owned and operated Long's Barber Service of Troy where he served the public for 67 years. He was a former president of the North Carolina Barber's Association, a member of the Troy Masonic Lodge #718 and the Lowe Warner American Legion Post #159. Harold was a US Army veteran of World War II. It was a special honor to him to have been sponsored by the Troy Rotary District 7690 to be a member of the inaugural flight October 3, 2009 of the Triad Flight of Honor to go to Washington, DC. There he was able to visit the World War II Memorial along with the Vietnam, Korean and the Franklin D Roosevelt Memorials. Harold was a man who was loyal to his God, his country and his family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife: Viree M. Long, his siblings: Carl Long, Helen McCoy and Jean Morton. He is survived by his wife: Virginia Hales Long of the home; one son: Richard H. Long and wife, Sandy of Gastonia; one daughter: Jeanette L Thompson and husband, Teddie of Seagrove; one sister: Paula L Stewart of Troy; one stepdaughter: Jaye Ballard of Winston Salem; 2 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy; other times at the home. Funeral services will be Friday at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E. Main Street, Troy with Dr. Phillips McRae officiating. Military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard will immediately follow the service at the church. Burial with Masonic rites, will be in Brown's Chapel Christian Church Cemetery, 608 Brown's Chapel Rd., Robbins. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Troy, PO Box 442, Troy, NC 27371.
