Virginia Ramsey McCartney died peacefully on September 26, 2008 at her home, Friends Homes West, in Greensboro, NC. She was born on August twenty-sixth 1918, in Gretna, Virginia the daughter of Dr. Oscar Lee Ramsey and Susie Crews Fitzgerald Ramsey. She was preceded in death by her husband O.K. McCartney, Jr., her siblings Edmund Fitzgerald Ramsey and Dr. Oscar Lee Ramsey, Jr., and her granddaughter Sallie Walker McCartney. She graduated from the University of Mary Washington in 1940. She taught high school business education in Chatham, Virginia. Mrs. McCartney moved with her family to Asheboro, NC in 1954. She was involved in many community endeavors over the years. Those include the Girl Scouts, the N.C. Zoological Park, the Asheboro-Randolph Public Library and the Randolph Arts Guild. Mrs. McCartney was a member of the Col. Andrew Balfour Chapter of DAR, the Reviewers Book Club and the Blanche McGlohon Sunday School Class of her church, the First United Methodist Church of Asheboro. Mrs. McCartney especially enjoyed travel with close friends to US and world destinations. She was chosen an ambassador in the Friendship Force International to Australia and New Zealand in 1986. In recent years she spent many happy hours gardening outside her apartment with other residents of Friends Homes West. Mrs. McCartney is survived by two sisters, Sue Ramsey Aylor in Lynchburg, VA and Rebecca Ramsey Forsyth in San Diego, CA. She is also survived by her son O. Kenton McCartney, III and his wife Carol in Charlottesville, VA and her daughter Susan McCartney Shelton and her husband Bob in Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Virginia McCartney Gliarmis, Katherine McCartney Gilliam, Robert Ramsey Shelton and Elizabeth Nelme Shelton and seven great grandchildren, John, Walker, Sallie, Scott, Anna Ramsey, Bobby, and Caroline. The family would like to express appreciation to her caregivers and friends at Friends Homes West who provided such loving and devoted attention to her in her final days. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 1st at the First United Methodist Church in Asheboro with the Rev. Michael Holder and Mrs. McCartney's cousin, the Rev. Dr. Sue Fitzgerald, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro (2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27405), the First United Methodist Church of Asheboro (224 N Fayetteville St, Asheboro, NC 27203) or the Asheboro-Randolph Public Library (201 Worth Street, Asheboro, NC 27203).
