Hampton, Va - Vergil Ray Lewis, 93, passed away Thursday, Nov.7, 2013, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Born September 29 1920, he was a native of Pamlico Co, NC, and had been a Hampton, VA resident for most of his life. He graduated from Stonewall High School in 1938. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in WWII, where he was a recipient of a Bronze Service Star, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and a WWII Victory Medal. After serving in the war, he worked 30 years in Civil Service. After retirement, he went on to teach air conditioning and refrigeration at Peninsula VO-TECH and at Thomas Nelson Community College. He was also a past member of Gideons International.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Lewis Hawkins and her husband, Thomas Alan Hawkins of Newport News, VA; three grand-daughters and one grand-son. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Martha Louise Floyd-Lewis, two daughters; Martha Ann Lewis and Aileen Lewis Bennett.
The private funeral service was conducted by Rev John Dey at Peninsula Funeral Home. After which, the interment services will be held Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1 PM at Shady Grove Christian Church, 2519 Okeewemee Road, Star by Rev. Jeff Freeman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
