Vera Newman McGrady, 81, of Asheboro was called to Heaven on Saturday, May 17, 2014. She died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.
Mrs. McGrady was born March 26, 1933 the daughter of Claude Swanson "Bill" and Laura Burnett Newman.
Mrs. McGrady was a native of Hillsville, VA and a graduate of Hillsville High School. She continued her education at Asheboro Commercial College. Vera was a very active member of Russell's Grove Baptist Church serving in many areas and was named "Saint of the Year" seven times. She formerly was employed with Blue Gem, Singer Store and retired from B. B. Walker Shoes as a supervisor. She was instrumental in starting Meals on Wheels in the Ulah area and volunteered as a reading tutor at Tabernacle Elementary School. Vera was a caring, giving person who loved helping others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Elihu "Mac" McGrady, one sister: Opal Carico, two brothers: Olen Newman and Donald Newman.
She is survived by two daughters: Becky McKee and her husband, Brent of Chapel Hill and Martha Conrad of Asheboro; grandson: Daniel Powell of Chapel Hill; three sisters: Alma Marshall of Woodlawn, VA, Mary Ann Combs of Hillsville, VA, Debbie McCraw of Galax, VA; one brother: Paul Swanson Newman of Chester, VA.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 19, 2014 from 5:30-7:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC prior to the funeral service at 7:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro with Rev. Tim Fonner officiating.
A committal service will be held at a later date in Hillsville, VA.
