Mr. Thomas Van Whitt, age 75, of Troy, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 with his family by his side at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Thomas was born December 23, 1937, in Attalla, Alabama, the son of TV and Frances Lee Whitt. He was a member of Ophir United Methodist Church. He received his Degree in Business from Jacksonville State, Northern Alabama. He was a former insurance salesman with Jefferson Pilot, office manager at Roadway Express, former employee of Burlington Industries and owner/operator of Whitt's Tire Outlet. Thomas was a member of the National Rifle Association and a US Army veteran. He is preceded in death by his parents.
He enjoyed hunting, grilling and cooking for his family. He was a special caregiver for his in-laws and never met a stranger. He looked after people in his community in times of need and loved to be a host in his community as well.
Thomas is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Barbara Hall Whitt of the home; one daughter: Carolyn Whitt Griggs and husband, Chip of Troy; one son: David Whitt and wife, Terri of Fort Mill, SC; five grandchildren: Will and Thomas Griggs, Jamison and Miranda Whitt and Hunter Tedder; one sister: Nadine Cockrum of Hoover, Alabama; three brothers: Oscar Whitt and wife, Patricia, Steve Whitt and wife, Angie, Harry Whitt and wife, Jeannie, all of Attalla, Alabama.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 216 N. Main St., Troy; other times at the home. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Ophir United Methodist Church, Ophir Road, Troy with Rev. Ron Scott and Dr. Rev. Harry Whitt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
