Thomas "Tommy" Carroll Lemonds

Thomas "Tommy" Carroll Lemonds, 82, of Asheboro, NC, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Randolph Hospice House. Tommy was born to Henry Thomas Lemonds and Annie Louise Wright on February 21, 1935 in Asheboro. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William (Billy) Lemonds. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rachel, brother, James Lawrence Lemonds, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews of the Ligon family, and extended family and friends. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2:00-3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 420 West Walker Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Brian Gawf and Rev. Connie Weaver officiating. Burial will be held in Oaklawn Cemetery. He was a member of the Asheboro Volunteer Fire Department and became a member of the Asheboro Fire Department. He later joined the Greensboro Fire Department and served in the Fire Prevention Bureau. He served as Union County's first Fire Marshal and was appointed Civil Defense Director for Union County (now known as Emergency Management Coordinator). He returned to Greensboro and the Greensboro Fire Department. He served as Battalion Chief of the Greensboro Fire Prevention Bureau. He was appointed to the North Carolina Building Code Council by Governor Jim Hunt (upon recommendations from the North Carolina State Fire Commission) to represent the Fire Service throughout the state. He retired from the Greensboro Fire Department as Assistant Chief in charge of the Fire Prevention Bureau. He was a charter member of the North Carolina Fire Marshal's Association and a member of the Board of Directors. Upon retirement, he returned to Asheboro and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Westminster Sunday School Class. At the church, he served on numerous committees including the Personnel Committee and Finance Committee and as Church Treasurer. Tommy enjoyed retirement and returning to Asheboro. He served on the Asheboro Redevelopment Commission and was a member of the Randolph County Genealogical Society where he served on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Tommy's caregiver, Virginia Stines, for all of her support and care.
