Susan Lowdermilk Burroughs

d. March 22, 2014

Susan Lowdermilk Burroughs (sometimes known as Granny Susan), age 100, died Saturday, March 22nd at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh. She was born June 21, 1913 to Abijah and Coney Lowdermilk in Seagrove, N.C. She married Paul Leach Burroughs June 30, 1934. They had a son, Paul, and a daughter, Sue. The couple moved to Raleigh when Paul was promoted to Manager of the Capital Coca Cola plant, where he worked until his death in 1948. Susan's best career move was when she became Resident Manager of Raleigh Towne Apartments: she had found just the right job and stayed with it for 40 years. She was featured in the News & Observer because of her remarkable work ethic. Susan found great comfort and joy when she visited her family farm in Seagrove, N.C. She relished that there was always something to do! - and when you finished you could sit in the swing for a spell. She is survived by: son, Dr. Paul Leach Burroughs, Jr. (Dianna) and daughter, Sue Field (Tommy); grandchildren: Dr. Paul Burroughs III (Jenny), Peter Burroughs (Kristin), Marshall Burroughs (Michelle), Kelly Field Trout (Hugh); great-grandchildren: Emily, Katie, Joe, Adam, Keith, Amelia and Andrew; niece, Judy Davis (Larry) and their family; nephews: Jimmy Lowdermilk (Pat) and Charles Lowdermilk, great nephew: Bill Kent and cousin, Ruth Ellen McDowell. Thank you to the staff of Springmoor Health Center for their loving care. A memorial service will be held at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Chapel at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 29, 2014. A funeral service will be held at Whynot Church at 3:00 pm Saturday with burial to follow in the Whynot Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27608 or charity of donor's choice.
