Shayla Dawn McKinnon, age 16, of 331 Yank Rd., Mt Gilead died Friday, October 17, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center, Main, Charlotte.
Shayla was born March 5, 1998 in Stanly County, NC, the daughter of Benjamin Deberry McKinnon, II and Alicia Loftin McKinnon of Mt. Gilead.
Shayla was a junior at West Montgomery High School where she was a member of the FFA and the Beta Club; she was a part-time employee at Food Lion of Troy. Shayla was beautiful inside and out and was known as "Pretty Girl." She had the prettiest smile that would light up the room when she walked in. She had a big heart and loved doing for others and never wanted to take any credit for it. She loved people but special needs children held a special place in her heart.
She is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather: Danny E. Loftin and paternal grandparents: Benjamin Deberry McKinnon and Jennifer G. McKinnon.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother: Kyle Deberry McKinnon of Mt. Gilead; maternal grandmother: Frances Morgan Loftin of Mt. Gilead and nephew: Kason McKinnon, also of Mt. Gilead.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 20, 2014 from 6-8 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy, NC; other times at the home of her parents. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 4:00 pm at West Montgomery High School Football Stadium, Warrior Drive, Mt Gilead with Rev. Ron Honeycutt and Rev. Brantley Moore officiating.
