Sara Allen Maness, 94, of Asheboro passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 2225 South Fayetteville St., Asheboro with Dr. Richard Crider officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park. She was born December 4th, 1919 to John Carl and Jodie Curlee Allen in Union County, North Carolina. She along with eight sisters and four brothers grew up on a cotton farm in Stanly County. While staying with her aunt and uncle, Ila and Riston High in Polkton, NC she met Fred Maness who was serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps. They were married on April 17, 1936. In the late 1930s they moved to Asheboro. While raising their two daughters she worked in various textile and hosiery mills including Cetwick Silk Mill, Swing Hosiery, and Rampon Products. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and all who came to visit. She always had a special love for children and taught children's Sunday School classes at Russells Grove Baptist Church and at Oakhurst Baptist Church where she was a member for more than sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred H. Maness, son-in-law Ed Cox, her parents, four brothers and six sisters. She is survived by her daughters Reba M. Cox of Jamestown, NC, Elaine M. Cox and husband Larry of Asheboro, grandchildren Lillie Cox of Burlington, Emmette Cox of Jamestown, Jason Cox of Asheboro, and Jonathan Cox of Raleigh, sisters Cassie Griffin of Pensacola, FL, Nellie Eudy of Albemarle, and many nieces and nephews. The family expresses a special thank you to the staff at Cross Road Assisted Living for the care she has received during the past five and a half years and to Hospice of Randolph for the comfort and support during the last several days.
