Russell Thomas Kirkman

Russell Thomas Kirkman, age 91, of Asheboro, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. Mr. Kirkman was born August 25, 1919 in Asheboro, NC the son of the late Cicero Thomas and Emma (Ward) Kirkman. He was a veteran of the Army and was retired from Burlington Industries with 45 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 71 years: Jewell Kirkman of the home, one son: Tom Kirkman and wife Brenda of Charlotte, NC, one daughter: Susie Hughes and husband Charlie of Sneads Ferry, NC; grandson, Russ Hughes and wife Kim of Charleston, SC; granddaughter, Angie Kapiko and husband Jay of Hampstead, NC; 12 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandson; one sister Kathleen Taylor of Charlotte, NC, sister-in-law, Mary Troy of Greensboro, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Russell was an avid fan of Duke basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball. He held several offices in Woodman of the World Lodge 921. Mr. Kirkman was a member of Central Falls United Methodist Church, holding many positions in the Methodist Church. He was also a long time worker with the Boy Scouts of America. The family will receive friends Tuesday May 10, 2011 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Adrian Pugh, Rev. Velma Allen, and Rev. James Gibson officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro with full military rites.
