Ruby Cox McDowell, age 85, of Asheboro, went to her heavenly home on Christmas Day following a brief illness surrounded by her loving family at her home. She joined her beloved husband of 67 years, Hal McDowell who preceded her in death in 2015.
Ruby was born August 14, 1931 in Randolph County, the daughter of Hayworth and Sarah Ethel Hicks Cox. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister and friend to all. Everyone knew her by her sweet, friendly smile and she always had unconditional love toward her family and her church family. She will be greatly missed by all.
She was a hairdresser for 51 years and owner of Ruby McDowell’s Beauty Salon where all the girls referred to her as “Mama Ruby” and was a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a charter member of Rushwood church and active in the Ladies Outreach. Ruby continued to work after retirement, rocking and loving on all the babies at Creative Kids Day Care with her daughter, Sheila and granddaughter, Heather. In addition to Hal, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Kathleen Swaney, Wade and Leon Cox.
She is survived by her daughters, Denise Nance and her husband, Mike and Sheila Robbins and her husband, Kenny, all of Asheboro; grandchildren, Heather Grant, Chad and Brian Robbins; great grandchildren, Braden and Bailee Robbins; and sisters, Ruth Hollingsworth, Hilda Swaney, Betty Gunter, and Beulah Mae Moran all of Asheboro.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 1:00-2:30 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will follow at 3:00 PM in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Brent Tysinger, Jerry Wilson, and Rev. Bobby Marsh officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Randolph for the care and compassion given Mrs. McDowell during her illness. In addition, they would also like to thank Dr. John Cameron for his kind, gracious, and attentive care over the years. Also, they would like to thank caregivers, Rachel, Deanie, and Krystal for their love and care given to Ruby.
