Robert Eugene Marziano, 63, of Advance, NC passed away on May 25, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in Asheboro, NC on May 31, 1948 to the late Julia Marie Clark and Hiram Italo Marziano. After graduating from Asheboro High School in 1966, he attended Gaston College where he was the starting center for the varsity basketball team. On December 28, 1968, he married his college sweetheart, Gigi Lee-aphon of Bangkok, Thailand.
Robert started and served as CEO of two community banks. He was most proud of helping people make better lives for themselves and their families during his career. He was a strong and charismatic leader and served as the first mayor of King, NC from 1984 to 1988. Robert also loved to play the guitar and sing and enjoyed poetry.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gigi, and their two daughters, Nikki Marziano Leahy and Maura Marziano. He has two sons-in-law, Ken Leahy and Rylan Keogh. He also has two beloved granddaughters, Jasmine and Veronica Leahy, and one brother, Hiram James Marziano. Robert was dearly loved by his family and friends who will always miss him.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on May 31, 2012 at King Moravian Church in King, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in honor of Robert Marziano to the Charlotte Chapter of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) at 205 Regency Executive Park Drive, Suite 102, Charlotte, NC 28217. Robert very much wanted to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes to benefit children like his granddaughter.
