Robert John “Bob” Cooper, age 80, of Asheboro died Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Randolph Hospice House.
Mr. Cooper was born September 20, 1937 in Akron, Ohio to Glenn and Louise Cooper.
He attended Western Carolina University where he played football and baseball and received the Little All American and All State awards. Throughout his career Mr. Cooper taught and coached football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and track. He was employed at Andrews High School, Kings Mountain High School, McColl High School, East Montgomery High School and North Asheboro Middle School. He also coached at Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University while pursuing Masters Degrees in Administration and Physical Education. "Coach" Cooper was inducted into the Andrews High School Hall of Fame in February of this year. He was a member of First Baptist Church and loved traveling to the mountains and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Brandi Cooper and brother, Tom Cooper.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gail Carpenter Cooper; daughter, Regina Thompson and husband Gary of Charlotte; son, Robert Cooper, Jr. and wife Teresa Cooper of Asheboro; grandchildren, Nicholas and Zachary Thompson of Charlotte, Jessica Wesolowski and husband Ken of King George, VA, Kayle and Austin Grace Cooper of Asheboro, Kristin and Lucas Cooper of Cincinnati, OH; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Sursavage and husband Butch of Waynesville.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 12:30-1:45 PM at the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church, 133 North Church Street, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary with Dr. Scotty Carpenter and Rev. Mark Hall officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
