In Loving Remembrance
I, Alice D Matthews, the youngest of four children, was born on January 17, 1943 to Cellaris and Magnolia Matthews in the Bronx, New York. I attended public school and I graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School. It was at that time, I realized the importance of education so I decided to further my studies. So, I attended Manhattan Bible Institute graduating with a Christian Worker’s certificate and later, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle.
In 1955, I became a faithful member of Thessalonian Baptist Church and met James Geter. In 1959, we started dating and on June 30, 1962 we were married and of our union were born four children, James JR., Jaelice, Jaclyn and Justina.
Many years later, in 1967, in searching for answers, I began to question the Lord about my life and attended a service at The Soul Saving Station in Harlem, NY where I was introduced to Jesus as my personal Savior. This was the beginning to a road of recovery from pain and bitterness. I joined and became a member, serving my church family wholeheartedly and dutifully in many capacities under the leadership of the late Bishop Jesse H. Winley & Bishop Alvin L. Tate. Through the ministry I was given the awesome opportunity to serve as a choir member, a member of the Circle of Love (visiting the sick/shut-in & senior ministry), Nurse’s Unit, Missionary, a single parent group leader, Sunday school teacher, and was on the Women’s Auxiliary board which organized women’s retreats, couple retreats, weddings and banquets. During the holidays and especially for New Year’s, I opened my home to various youth’s throughout the community as well as the Church.
When I entered the workforce in 1963, my experiences afforded me the opportunity to work in many capacities beginning at the Federal Reserve Bank. I then became a part of the Christ Crusader Academy staff as an Assistant Teacher. While completing my degree, I was employed as a Case Worker at Fordham Tremont Mental Health. Upon receiving my degree I was promoted to Case Manager/Supervisor at the Create House (a men’s shelter). Later retiring from the position as the Director of Leo House (a girls group home), New York City.
In 1991, my husband and I felt that God had called us into Ministry so we left our home in New York City and started our journey to Cincinnati Ohio. It was there that the two of us became Assistant Pastors under the late Pastor Ostell and Pastor Phyllis Shippy.
Then, in 1994, we relocated from Ohio to North Carolina for me to serve at the Asheboro location of Soul Saving Station within several ministries as a Minister, Sunday School Teacher, an Administrative Assistant of the Collegiate Bible Institute along with visiting seniors and those that were hospitalized.
Throughout life’s changes and as I matured, I accepted the mantle in which The Late, Mother Helen, one of the prayer warriors of Soul Saving Station, Harlem, NY) had passed onto me as an “Intercessor of Prayer”.
On February 3, 2016, Reverend Alice D. Geter, departed this life here on earth and went home to be with the Lord.
