Ray William Snell of Asheboro died on Monday, June 8, 2015. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Asheboro on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM. A private burial will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro. Ray was born in Dayton, Ohio on November 3, 1927. His parents were Geneva Welbaum Snell and William Henry Snell. Ray completed school at Bath Township School in Fairborn, Ohio. Ray entered the Army at the end of WWII and served in the occupational forces in Korea. After his military service, he attended the University of Dayton and Purdue University. He graduated from Purdue with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Ray went to work with the DuPont Company and worked in Indiana, Michigan, Northern Ireland, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania before retiring in 1989 after 37 years of service. Ray and Alice married in Northern Ireland and moved to Asheboro after Ray retired in 1989. While in West Virginia, Ray served as a deacon at the Riverlawn Presbyterian Church in St. Albans, West Virginia. Ray also served as an Elder at Peters Creek Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro since 1989 and was chairman of the Columbarium committee. Ray and Alice were founding members of Compassionate Friends, an association for bereaved parents. Ray is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Lewis Snell, his sister, Mary Eleanor Snell Coury and his son, Thomas Ray Snell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Beatrice Henry Snell, daughter Helen Louise Snell Schieve and husband Peter of Winchester, Virginia; sons, William Henry Snell of Greensboro and Donald Ray Snell of Morrisville, North Carolina. Grandchildren, Ian Schieve, Keegan Schieve, Fiona Schieve, Sarah Snell, and Kayla Snell. The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church 420 West Walker Avenue, Asheboro 27205 or to the ALS Association, 4 Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro is in charge of arrangement.
