Ray McKelly Hughes, age 79, of 662 Tall Pine St., Asheboro died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Randolph Hospital.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 1 :00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 2:00 PM at Russell's Grove Baptist Church, 5118 U.S. Hwy 220 Bus. South, Asheboro with Rev. Tim Fonner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hughes was born in Randolph County on July 3, 1932 to Joe and Mary Ann Hughes. He was a member of Russell's Grove Baptist Church in Asheboro. Ray was formerly employed with Carolina Pacific, Stuart Furniture, and Guilford Dairy. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death his wife Sara E. Hughes, son Jeffrey Neil Hughes, granddaughter Jessica Nicole Hughes, and sister Myrtle Pugh. Ray was an avid sportsman. He loved all sports with his favorite being NASCAR and he was most notable for racing the half pint car at Biscoe Speedway.
He is survived by sons, Joe Hughes and his wife Beverly of Asheboro, NC, Phillip Hughes and his wife Bobbi of Randleman, NC; grandchildren, Douglas Hughes and his girlfriend Missi Taylor, Daniel Hughes and his girlfriend Crystal Baxter, Kelli Shears and her husband Nathan, Kayla Hughes, Ashley Hughes, Allison Hughes, and Michael Hughes; great grandchildren, Skylar Hughes and Spencer Hughes; sisters, Annie Haskins of High Point, NC and Helen Williams of High Point, NC.
