Peggy York Sholar

April 6, 1935 — April 22, 2023

Asheboro, NC

Peggy York Sholar, 88, of Asheboro, North Carolina passed away on April 22nd after a year of declining health. She was born on April 6th, 1935 in Asheboro to Hal C. York and Alta C. York. Peggy graduated from Asheboro High School Class of 1953, East Carolina College Class of 1957, and obtained her Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.

Peggy married Edsel Wimberly Sholar on September 19, 1959 and was married to him for 39 years before his passing. Together they had two sons, Gregory York Sholar and James Marcus Sholar, of whom they were both immensely proud. Peggy was a lover of all animals and would never let a neighborhood cat, dog, or raccoon go hungry…or really, any animal she felt needed to be fed. She was a talented pianist and played throughout her life, even within the past few weeks. Peggy loved her grandchildren and great-grandchild dearly, often asking for new photos so she could update her computer screensaver.

She dedicated her life to public education, teaching in Virginia and New Jersey early in her career before eventually returning to Asheboro, where she taught at Donna Lee Loflin Elementary School and Central School. The rest of her years in public education were spent as the librarian at Asheboro High School. Peggy loved being involved in student activities, including leading the Asheboro High School Spirit Club, and attended all of the high school sporting events, both at home and away.

She found great joy in her connection with her students. She often reminisced on her days teaching, telling stories to anyone who would listen, and talked frequently about how blessed she felt to still be in touch with former students.

Peggy is survived by her son, James Marcus Sholar (Stacey) of Morganton; her grandson, Guy Sholar (Heather) of Aydlett; her granddaughter Sarah Sholar of Nashville, TN; her grandson Ben Sholar of Cashiers; and her great-grandson Archer Sholar of Aydlett. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hal C. York and Alta C. York; her husband Edsel Wimberly Sholar; her brothers James York and Hal York; and her son, Gregory York Sholar.

At her request there will be a private family memorial service. Donations can be made in her memory to The Alpha-1 Foundation, ATTN: Development Office, 3300 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Coral Gables, FL 33134 and The Humane Society of Randolph County, PO Box 4384 Asheboro, NC 27204.
