Pauline Steed Thomas, 97, of Climax, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Born March 1, 1916, in Asheboro, she was the daughter of Charles Woodburn "Duncan" Steed and Susan Frances Prichard Steed.
Pauline is preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Clarence Ray Thomas, her parents, brothers: Clarence Carl, Willard Frank, Charles Fletcher, Jonathan Everett, William, Hal Dixon, and Clyde Wilson; sisters: Mary Blanche Cox and Louette Steed; daughter, Janet Thomas Morris and great-granddaughter, Leah Elizabeth Way.
She is survived by one son, Neal Thomas and wife Susie; granddaughter Martha Way and grandson Doug Thomas and wife Lorraine; six great-grandchildren: Will, Cam and Mailey Way and Anna, Luke and Andrew Thomas; several nieces and nephews; special family friends, Evan and Pam Griffin; and one sister-in-law, Dorlas Steed.
On November 24, 1937, Pauline, Polly as she was known to the Steeds, married Ray Thomas and together they created a home that welcomed everyone. Granny gave meaning to the word "homemaker:" raising two children, sewing clothes for the family, baking, freezing and canning produce from the garden, sharing responsibility for work on the farm, especially grading eggs. Sunday worship and lunch afterward with family and friends were a highlight of each week. Granny also loved needlework, doll making and painting. After retiring from the farm, she and Ray were enthusiastic campers, often taking their grandchildren with them. Especially important to Granny was her Christian faith. Aside from the responsibilities to her meeting, she devoted many hours sewing for the American Friends Service Committee. Granny truly dedicated her life to her family and service to her God and community.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 2 :00 p.m. at Asheboro Friends Meeting with the Reverends Ken and Pat Thames officiating. Visitation will follow the memorial service.
