Nolan Williams

Nolan Williams, 92, of Whittier passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017 with his family by his side. Mr. Williams was born March 29, 1924 to Samuel and Theodoshia Hinshaw Williams. As a child, Nolan delivered telegrams on his bicycle (and is convinced that led to his longevity). At the ripe age of 18 he was called to serve his great country. Never leaving Randolph County, Nolan was sent to Fort Hood, Texas for basic training and shortly after set sail to the beaches of Normandy. As a WWII soldier, Nolan served during the Battle of the Bulge and D Day. He and his comrades had to witness and live in conditions that truly gave them the right as "true American heroes". Nolan attained 5 bronze and 1 Silver Star during his 4 years of service. After returning from the war, Nolan would start his career of building homes, several in the Asheboro area, then moving his family to Boynton Beach, FL, where they would reside for 19 years. He attained his general contractor license, building multiple homes and serving on Boynton Beach Board of Zoning and Plumbing. Moving to Whittier in 1976, Nolan would continue to build homes for several years. After his retirement, Nolan was truly blessed to spend wonderful quality time with his family and friends. Nolan was a wonderful husband, and best friend to his children, truly a full book of knowledge. All that knew Nolan loved him. He enjoyed NASCAR, restoring antique cars with his son and in his later years, found a love for playing his pedal steel guitar. In addition to his parents, Nolan was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Vasil Doudov, brother, Herbert Williams and wife Frances, sisters, Dorothy Hulin and husband Troy, Effie Morgan and husband Coy, Alta Conner and husband Alvin and brother-in-law Junior Bailey. He is survived by his bride of 68 years, Hilda Wright Williams of the home and their beloved dog, Tinker; daughter, Nola Doudov of Asheville; one son, Gene Williams and wife Liz of Whittier; grandchildren, Adriane Doudov of Asheville, Aaron Williams and wife Amanda of Whittier; great grandchildren, Cody and Mason Williams; sister, Lillian Bailey of Asheboro and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Friday, February 17, 2017 from 11:00 AM-12:45 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 PM at High Pine Wesleyan Church Cemetery, 4492 High Pine Church Rd., Asheboro with Jack Whitley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Carepartners Hospice of Asheville, 20 Rotary Dr., Asheville, NC 28803. .
