Nina Trogdon Barone, age 91, passed away at the Arboretum at Heritage Greens in Greensboro, January 20, 2017. She was born October 26, 1925 in Asheboro, NC to Lena and Samuel Erman Trogdon. With her passing, the Lord has gained another angel and her family and friends are left with memories of an incredible woman who was a loving and devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and a gifted teacher. In addition to her outward beauty, grace and elegance, Nina had an inner strength and warmth born of her Christian upbringing and a genuine compassion for others that enriched the lives of everyone she encountered.
Nina graduated from Greensboro Women's College and went on to pursue a lifelong career as a teacher and homemaker. She was passionate about teaching children of all ages and was a fervent advocate of improving and advancing the teaching profession. While in college, she met her husband of 59 years, Ben A. Barone, a career Air Force Officer and Pilot. While she was a student teacher, their courtship led to Ben flying over Nina's school during recess where he dropped an apple on a parachute with a proposal of marriage. Together they literally traveled the world. She and Ben were blessed to have shared a once in a lifetime kind of love and friendship that was evident to everyone who saw them together. Above all that Nina was and did in her life; she was devoted to her husband, and cherished her four sons and the family that they built. She and Ben raised their sons with love and a spirit for living life to its fullest. She created a wonderful home environment and loved to play bridge and could be heard frequently playing the piano in a home where music was part of the fabric of life. She had a passion for teaching that began with her sons and spread to all those she taught in a classroom. Nina truly left people better than when she first met them.
In addition to her parents, Nina was preceded in death by a child: Baby Boy Barone, husband: Ben Barone; son: Michael Barone and his wife, Janice Barone; siblings: Samuel Erman Trogdon, Jr. and wife Gladys, James Orland Trogdon, William Joseph Trogdon and wife Ann, and Wanda Trogdon Ilderton; niece: Sallie Trogdon Gallasch; sister-in-law: Jean Trogdon Sykes.
Nina is survived by her sons: Ben Barone of Atlanta, GA, Steven (Mary Jane) Barone of New Orleans, LA and David (Lisa)Barone of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren: Amanda (Jeff) Lorenz, Kate Barone, Rachel Barone, Tessa Barone, Ashley (Chris) Bills, Steven (Ashlee) Barone, Meredith (Jason) Smiley and Lisa Marie (Ben) Long and Jake (Christy) Williamson; great-grandchildren: Gabriella Barone, Dominic Barone, Samantha Bills and Madeline Bills; brother-in-law: Clarence Ilderton and many beloved nieces and nephews from the Trogdon and Ilderton families.
Nina's loving nature and gentle heart are irreplaceable and will never be forgotten. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy, and will be missed by all who knew her.
