Mildred Coleen Sawyer

Mildred Colleen Sawyer entered her Heavenly Home on September 9, 2024.

Mildred was Born September 5, 1935 in Sophia, NC to Carson and Fannie Sawyer. She attended New Market elementary school, Randleman High School, Pilgrim Bible College in Kernersville and Greenville College in Illinois.

She taught five years in Illinois before moving back to North Carolina to teach English and Writing at Asheboro High School. She also completed her Masters in Education at UNC Greensboro during this time. While at Asheboro High, she served as chairman of the English and Foreign Languages Department and received the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity and Innovation in Teaching and Administration. She also was named “Teacher of the Year”. She later became an adjunct Professor of English at Randolph Community College. She retired from teaching in 1991.

Mildred was a faithful member of Midway Wesleyan Church in Randleman where she served as church treasurer, Gleaners Sunday School class teacher, church board member, board secretary and delegate to The Wesleyan Church’s district conference. She also wrote devotionals which were published in the “Light From the Word” devotional series. 

After her retirement from teaching, she enjoyed gardening, her work with her church, learning to play the violin and travel. She was able to visit 45 US states and the countries of Israel, Italy and England. Highlights of her foreign travels were traveling the canals of Venice in a Gondola, worshiping in Wesley Chapel in London and visiting the Sistine Chapel in Rome. 

Her testimony until her last breath was, “He has been with me, and will be with me every step of the way. Whatever the circumstance of life, His abiding presence is a promise. Whatever I have done in life, I give Him all the credit.”

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, E Webster Sawyer and her sister Rachel Sawyer Dickens. She is survived by Sisters Thelma Sawyer Hill and Judy Sawyer French (Larry). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children.

Her family will receive friends at Midway Wesleyan Church, 331 Worthville, Rd., Randleman on September 14, 2024, from 10:00-10:45 am. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM at the church. Burial services will be at the Midway Wesleyan Church cemetery immediately after the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorial donations be directed to Midway Wesleyan Church Funeral Fund, 331 Worthville Rd., Randleman, NC 27317
