Mike Johnson

Mike "The Jokeman" Johnson, age 78, of Asheboro, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Woodland Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Mike was born in LaGrange, Ga on February 26, 1940 to Roy and Francis Woodruff Johnson. He was the youngest of 6 children and later added 2 additional siblings when his mother married Paul Vollenwieder after his father`s premature death. Mike was a 1958 graduate of LaGrange High School and went on to earn a BS Degree in Marketing at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He served in the US Army Medical Corp from 1962-1965 at Fort Bragg, NC where he met his wife of 54 years, Betsy Lee.

Mike spent his entire 50+ year career in the floor covering industry. He worked many years with global manufacturers such as Burlington and Mohawk Industries then later opened Asheboro Carpet and Tile before transitioning back to his true love of selling. It was his endeavors here that earned him the nickname "The Jokeman". He never left his office without a new joke he would share with every customer or competitor he met. Mike was also a former member of the Board of Directors for the NC Floor Covering Association.

He is survived by his wife Betsy Johnson; children Michael Johnson and wife Julie of Milton, GA, Keith Johnson and wife Melinda of Hilton Head, SC, and Amy Johnson Byrd and husband Andrew of Asheboro; grandchildren Jason, Annie, Gus, Sidney, George, Ashten, Callie and Annie; great grandchildren Collier, Ella and Lenora.

Mike accepted Jesus as his savior at an early age, enjoyed a strong faith and lived his life giving. His influence and impact on others is evident with the lives he has touched as a husband, a father, a mentor and a friend. He will be missed by many.
