Melva Gray Foster, 91, joined her Lord on August 4, 2017. She spent her final days surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Melva was born September 23rd, 1925 in Greensboro, NC. She graduated from Elon College in 1951 with a B.S. in Religious Studies. A devout Christian, Melva had been a member of the Elon Community Church of Christ since she was a student at Elon. She was a member of the choir for over 60 years, and even traveled to Europe with them. Melva served as a Deacon and was a secretary of the Women's Fellowship, among other invaluable commitments that she made to her church, which she loved dearly.
A dedicated worker, Melva retired from Carolina Biological Supply Co. at the age of 70, after 33 years of service. In her retirement, she and her sister Sara Dodson taught ceramics. Melva and her sister Sara shared a unique bond and lived together, sharing in life experiences for over 38 years. Melva was a devoted Aunt, a loyal friend, a beautiful singer, a lover of humming birds, lighthouses, and cats. She loved collecting unique toys and holiday decorations and she made the best pecan pie in Alamance County.
Melva is survived by her loving nieces and their spouses, Rebecca and Gene Franklin, and Janet and David Hudson; 5 great nieces and nephews and their spouses, Geoff and Jo Hamm, Jenni and Jon Weaver, Jessica and Ed Arnold, Stephen and Liz Franklin, and Chris and Tracy Franklin; and 8 great-great nieces and nephews, Jace, Jamie, Sam, Maggie, Maddox, Finn, Lucy and Millie. Maggie Graysa was given her middle name to honor her Great-Great Aunt, Melva Gray, and her Great Grandmother, Sara. Melva was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Everett Foster and Ersley Stout Foster and her sister Sara Foster Dodson.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 12th from 11:00 am until 11:30 am at Elon Community Church, 271 N. Williamson Avenue, Elon, NC. A memorial service honoring Melva will follow at 11:30 am. Graveside interment will be held in Asheboro at 2:30 pm at the Spoons Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Melva requested that donations be made to the Music Program at the Elon Community Church.
