Sheriff Maynard B. Reid, Jr. age 69, of Asheboro passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Randolph Hospital. He was born in October 1946. He was raised in Randolph County and it gave him wonderful opportunity to meet many fine people.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sandra Jackson Reid; aunt, Genevieve Buchanan; numerous cousins and all of his adopted "yung'ins" at Randolph County Sheriff's Office.
Maynard was preceded in death his parents, Maynard B. Reid, Sr. and Eloise Johnson Corbett, and his stepfather, Max Wayne Corbett.
Maynard graduated from Asheboro High School in 1965. He joined the United States Marine Corps shortly after in 1968 and served with honor in the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, he was combat wounded and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and discharged in 1970.
After returning from Vietnam, he attended Randolph Community College and received an Associates of Applied Science degree in Business Administration.
He applied his degree straight out of college by working in the Business Office at Randolph Hospital from 1973 to 1978.
Maynard began his law enforcement career in 1978 with the Asheboro Police Department working with both the Patrol and Vice Narcotics units. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant while on patrol.
In 1990, Maynard left the Asheboro Police Department to work for the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. During the past 22 years with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, he was in charge of the Vice Narcotics unit and later as patrol commander.
Maynard was elected Sheriff of Randolph County in 2006, 2010 and for a third term in 2014.
Maynard has been a specialized instructor in Basic Law Enforcement Training since 1986. He earned a Police Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training & Standards Division and also a Sheriff's Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff's Training & Standards Division.
Maynard was a current member on the North Carolina Sheriff's Education and Training and Standards Commissions.
He was a member of the Randolph Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 8, 2016 from 4:00-9:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Sunset Avenue Church of God, 900 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro with Gary Mason and Chaplain Dwight Ayers officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
