Mattie Craven Owens, age 100, of 601 North Elm St., Asheboro died Friday, September 2, 2011 at the Randolph Hospice House. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 4, 2011 from 3:00-4:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. Funeral services will follow on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 4:00 PM at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Ms. Owens was born on June 6, 1911 in Moore County, NC to John Wesley and Annie Louise Maness Craven. Mattie was the oldest living member of First Baptist Church where she attended for 86 years. She was formerly employed with Cetwick Silk Mill and retired from Bossong Hosiery. After her retirement, she was employed as a healthcare sitter and later worked at Brian Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson John David Broadway and one great grandson. Mattie was known for her beautiful flowers and garden at her home. She was very independent and loved helping others, but did not want anybody to help her. She is survived by her daughters, Martha Broadway and her husband Furman of Southport, NC, Mary Owens of the home, Juanita Williams of Asheboro, NC; grandsons, David Williams and his wife Paula of Holly Springs, NC, Michael Broadway, Sr. and his wife Dana of Stewartstown, PA, Samuel Broadway and his wife Carol of Summersville, SC, Daniel Broadway of Folly Beach, SC and 8 great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 133 North Church Street, Asheboro, NC 27203 or Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
