Mattie Banks Gibson, age 92, of Asheboro died Monday, October 28, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, NC. Born in the mountains of Kentucky, she was a remarkable businesswoman, mother and grandmother for the better part of a century. Her strong will, love of family and practical approach to life was instilled in all of her descendants. She will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Gibson was born November 25, 1926 in Whitesburg, KY to Navar and Susanna Banks.
She was a member of Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband Obra Ozia Gibson and 3 sisters, Maxine Henderson, Pauline Banks, and Betty Jo Hood and 2 brothers, Ted Banks and Charles Banks.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda G. Levin of Durham, and Susan G Brown and husband Noel Brown of Wilmington, and one son, David Lee Gibson of Madison. Ms. Gibson has 6 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 11:00-11:45 am at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mack Summey officiating. Burial will be at Parks Crossroads Christian Church, Ramseur.
