Mary Sykes Varner

Mary Sykes Varner, age 87, of 1057 Moffitt Rd., Asheboro died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Clapps Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro. Mrs. Varner was born June 30, 1921 the daughter of John Robert and Ethel Luther Sykes. Mrs. Varner was a native of Randolph County, retired from B.B. Walker Shoe Company and a member of New Union United Methodist Church. She had worked as a registrar with the Randolph County Board of Elections and had written the Neighborhood News column for the Courier-Tribune. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Howard Varner; son: John Hal Varner; daughter and son-in-law: Dianne and John Anderson; grandson: Tommy Luck; and two brothers: Ransome and Ernest Sykes. She is survived by four daughters and their husbands: Peggy and James Allmon of Asheboro, NC; Helen and Gary Luck of Asheboro, NC; Betty and Billy Allmon of Asheboro, NC; Margaret and Jeffery Clark of Asheboro, NC and son and his wife: Bill and Frances Varner of Asheboro, NC; son and his wife: Bobby and Geraldine Varner of Asheboro, NC; and son: Richard Varner of Asheboro, NC; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 3, 2008, from 6 - 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be Thursday, September 4, 2008, at 2:00 PM at New Union United Methodist Church, 1293 Union Church Road, Asheboro. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
