Mary Helen "Polly" Williams Davis has gone home to her Heavenly Father. Mary Helen, 88, of Randleman passed away peacefully Thursday, September 22, 2011 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.
Mary Helen was born April 21, 1923 in Randolph County, the daughter of the late Thomas Verdie Williams and Lelar Kivett Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Jessie "Ed" Davis and her special father and mother in law, Roy Jessie Davis and Ida Farrington Davis.
Helen met the love of her live and they were married June 21, 1941, just two weeks prior to Ed leaving for service in World War II. Helen waited patiently for Ed to return from the war for 4 yrs., 4 months, and 21 days. During those four years she lived in Central Falls with a dear sister in law, Bertie Mae Davis Cole, and a close friend, June Rich and her daughter, Jo Ann. While waiting for Ed, she worked at the mill in Central Falls. For a time after Ed returned home, she was a homemaker and during that time she and Ed welcomed a daughter. Shortly after their daughter was born, Helen joined the workforce with her husband at Klopman Mills in North Asheboro. Later, she would retire at the young age of 71, after working at Commonwealth-Wee Sox Hosiery Mill for more than 40 years, to care for her ailing husband.
Helen was quite a sweet person who had so many unselfish traits. She was dedicated to her family. She was her beloved husband's loving caregiver for more than sixty years. She was a loving and caring mother who wanted the best for her daughter. She was a grandmother and great grandmother who loved "her girls" like a mother, made sure they were always taken care of, and cherished her time with them. Helen was a unique and special person to so many that knew her. Never one to sit still, even after retirement, she could most often be found tending to her immaculate yard or making sure her house was spotless. Helen truly led her life by example by always being there for others, catering to neighbors who were ill, and checking in on friends and family even throughout her own personal struggles. Helen loved the Lord, was of the Baptist faith and in earlier years loved being a Sunday school teacher for the small children.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Mary Sue Davis Hackney and husband C. Landis of Asheboro, granddaughter, Crystal Shaw Macon and husband, Keith of Asheboro, and great granddaughter, Sophie Beth Macon, and three special grand dogs, Bud, Sissy, and Nestle'. She is also survived by three sisters, Ruth W. McDaniel, Frances W. Morris, and Betty W. Albright and husband, Colon, all of Burlington, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC with Rev. Jim Honeycutt and Chaplin, Tim Pheagin officiating.
