Marian Barber Duggins passed away Sunday, April 4, at 2:45 pm. She was born in Draper, N.C., in 1925 to Odell and Autney (Hughs) Barber. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Paul Duggins. Ms. Duggins worked all her life as a nurse. She attended the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and received her Master's Degree in Public Health from UNC-Chapel Hill. She lived and worked in Winston Salem until 1978, when she accepted the position of Nursing Director of the New Hanover County Public Health Department. She retired in 1989 but continued to work with the Elder Care Program and to serve on the Board of Directors of the YWCA. She was a recipient of the Margaret B. Dolan Award for distinguished service to nursing in North Carolina. Survivors are daughter, Eva R. Duggins (Gary Kaufman) of Troy, N.C. and son, Bill Duggins (Teresa) of Wilmington, N.C. Grandchildren are Jonathan Duggins, Benjamin Haywood and Jackie Haywood. A sister, Mrs. Pat Newman (Rev. James D. Newman) lives in Lynchburg, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Troy, NC. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Crestview Memorial Park, 6850 University Pkwy, Rural Hall, N.C. with Rev. Gary Kaufman officiating. She spent the last years of her life at Sandy Ridge Assisted Living in Candor, N.C. The family would like to thank all those staff members who took "Miss Marian" into their hearts.
