Margaret Lucille Ward Jenkins died May 15, 2012 at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro, NC. She was born February 14, 1914 in Randolph County, the second of four children of Lou (Nixon) and Ross W. Ward. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Benjamin P. Jenkins Jr. in 1999, her sisters Edna Marie Ward and Verel Ward Kesler and her brother Benjamin Joseph Ward.
In 1941, she married Ben Jenkins of Shelby, NC. She is survived by their only son, Ben Jenkins III, wife Marianne of Charlotte, NC, grandson Benjamin J. Jenkins, and wife Meredith of New York City and his mother Nancy Johnson Jenkins, great grandchildren Benjamin Patrick Jenkins, James William Jenkins and David Edmund Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins had a wonderfully special relationship with her step grandchildren Melissa C. Patterson and her husband Billy and Catherine R. Carrick and likewise with her nieces and nephews Lou Ross K. Penland, her husband Bob, Phyllis K. Avant, her husband George, Harry Mauney, his wife Diane and Mark Mauney. She also leaves behind special friends Nancy Hammonds and Peggy Killian and cousins Rebecca and Joetta Moore and John and Liz Brady.
Mrs. Jenkins graduated from Liberty High School and Rutgers University School of Nursing in New Brunswick, New Jersey. As she started her nursing career, she met her husband in Asheboro where they were married and lived before moving to Shelby, NC. They relocated to Asheboro in 1955 where Mrs. Jenkins has lived for the past 57 years. She served as Supervisor of Nursing for the Randolph County Health Department before retirement in 1980.
Mrs. Jenkins was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Asheboro and enjoyed both a love of gardening and the decorative arts.
She was a wonderfully strong, focused yet gentle woman, kind to all, proud of her nursing profession and a real hero to her family.
Pugh Funeral Home is assisting the Jenkins family where Mrs. Jenkins will remain. A memorial service with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 2 o'clock at First Baptist Church, 133 North Church Street followed by visitation. Burial will be private.
